What do the letters relating to speed on a tyre mean?

The letters that you see on a tyre - usually after the rest of the information - relate to the maximum speed that a tyre can perform at. Each letter has a different top speed associated with it which will mean that certain cars such as performance cars wouldn't be able to use simple passenger car tyres. In general, winter tyres have lower speed ratings than their summer counterparts. However, an H rated winter tyre can still travel at speeds up to 131mph. If you have any doubts about your current tyre selection, then please consult your vehicles manufacturer handbook to check the speed rating acceptable for use on your vehicle.

Your tyre size guide

If you don’t know what you’re looking for, look at the diagram below:

Your tyre size is on the sidewall of the tyre, the sidewall of the tyre is the part that you can see when you look at your tyre on your vehicle.

On the sidewall you will see a series of numbers, these numbers are the actual size of your tyre.

If you look at the picture below we have highlighted the Width, Profile, Rim Size, Load Rating & Speed Rating.

A Tyre width

the width of the tyre, measured in millimetres.

B Tyre profile

The height of a tyre sidewall as a precentage of the width.

C Tyre size

The diametre of the wheel's inner rim, measured in inches.

D Speed rating

Indicates the maximum speed for the tyre.
