Where can I get affordable tyres?

Fitting your car with a set of brand new tyres can be quite costly, but when it comes to improving your car’s performance and saving you money on fuel, then it becomes a worthwhile investment. Many people don’t realise how beneficial a tyre can actually be, but it is in fact one of the most important elements of your car because it effects so many important areas to bring you a better driving experience. If you have a set of tyres that are damaged then it could result in some very serious consequences for your vehicle and your health, because it doesn’t matter how expensive your car is, all the horsepower will be worthless as your car won’t be able to get traction and so it won’t perform at its maximum.

If you fail to ensure your tyres are at a safe standard it can be classed as a criminal offence and the police will get involved, because the risk of causing an accident increases so it is imperative to update them for the safety of yourself and other road users. That’s why finding a great set of tyres is necessary, but if you are still wary about the financial impact it will have on your life, then not to worry as there are plenty of places where you can find an affordable set of tyres.

There are three main areas where you can purchase high-quality tyres at a reasonable price, providing you with the some of the industry’s biggest brands like Michelin, Dunlop and Pirelli. These areas consist of:

·         Franchised dealers: the main method of purchasing tyres is through a franchised dealer who stocks a variety of ‘common’ tyres, so finding one on short notice shouldn’t be too difficult unless you need a specialty tyre.

·         Specialists: tyre specialists are probably your best option if you want a tyre on short-notice and they usually have a wider selection of quality tyres. The prices can be quite steep compared to franchised dealers however, but if you are any good at haggling, then you can generally push for a price that’s reasonable.

·         Online sellers: purchasing tyres online can be very useful as it is almost certain that they will have a wide range as the internet is global. However, the price won’t be able to be budged and delivery could take a while, so it is best to anticipate when to purchase.

Your tyre size guide

Your tyre size is on the sidewall of the tyre, the sidewall of the tyre is the part that you can see when you look at your tyre on your vehicle.

On the sidewall you will see a series of numbers, these numbers are the actual size of your tyre.

If you look at the picture below we have highlighted the Width, Profile, Rim Size, Load Rating & Speed Rating.

A Tyre width

the width of the tyre, measured in millimetres.

B Tyre profile

The height of a tyre sidewall as a precentage of the width.

C Tyre size

The diametre of the wheel's inner rim, measured in inches.

D Speed rating

Indicates the maximum speed for the tyre.
