Car Tyre Safety

At Easy Wheels we want your tyres to give you a complete driving experience, paramount to that is safety. Your tyres are your only point of contact with the road making them very important!

Safety experts agree that tyre performance deteriorates hugely when the main tread is below 2mm, especially in wet and icy conditions. If your tyre tread is below this, it’s a good idea to start looking into getting some new rubber!.

The legal limit in the UK for tyre tread is 1.6mm across 3/4 of the total tyre, the penalty for not adhering to this law is 3 points and a maximum fine of £2500 per tyre.

At Easy Wheels we recommend checking the condition of your tyres regularly – at least once a week.

Worn tyres alter the performance of your car, low tread can increase braking distances, reduce the effect of steering and acceleration, putting you and your passengers at risk. Take a few moments each week to check them out and you will have a better, safer driving experience and avoid any unwanted fines and points on your licence.

When you are doing your weekly check there are five areas you should pay particular attention to:-

  • Overall condition, including inner and outer sidewalls;
  • Tread depth
  • Tyre pressure
  • Any sign of irregular wear
  • The spare tyre – lots of people forget this!

Tread Depth

The British law stipulates a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across 3/4 of the tyre. The deeper the tread the more grip you have whilst driving.

If your tyres do not meet these requirements you could face a fine of upto £2500 and 3 penalty points per tyre.

Tyre Pressure

At first glance your tyre may look fine. A tyre needn’t look flat to be underinflated, to maintain safety you should check your pressures at least once a week, your vehicle manual will provide this information, or it is often found in service stations. Always check the pressure of cold tyres, if you have been driving leave them for an hour before testing.

If your tyre pressures are incorrect, either under or over inflated the vehicles handling will be seriously affected, in extreme cases this will make the vehicle unstable.

Having the wrong pressures in your tyres will also increase tyre wear, which means you will have to replace them more often and increases the chances of complete failure of the tyre.

Wheel Alignment

When checking your tyres, if you notice that the tread is uneven, this could be an indication of under/over inflation. If the tyre is worn on one edge it could be due to poor wheel alignment, this could be due to running over potholes or clipping kurbs. If this is the case you should take your vehicle to a garage to have its tracking checked. This is an additional service but the majority of our affiliated garages will be happy to do this for you, an additional charge may be incurred.

Wheel Balancing

Unbalanced wheels can cause serious damage, when your tyres are replaced by an Easy Wheels affiliated garage they will be balanced for you.

It is not only unsafe to ignore the minimum tyre tread depth, it's against the law. For each illegal tyre you face a fine of up to £2,500 and the chance of three penalty points on your driving license.
